E - Between Us Only!13 Majid Books

Book One – Between Us Only!

An author in search of   values and ethics

Oman Daily Observer –   Features Editor

September 10 2005

Coverage – Between Us   Only   by Majid Said Nasser Al Suleimany   434 pages, Price RO 7

The book is available   at Family Bookshop Turtle Bookshops    and all   leading bookshops in Oman /  Magrudy in   UAE

Majid al Sulaimany is a well-read, witty and prolific writer who often   makes you laugh and sit up and think on ordinary but often neglected and not   so cared matters in the society. He also writes about social evils prevalent   in the society with a funny touch and lashes it with heavy blows. This unique   style and way we rarely find in other writers. His prose is simple and clear   and elegant.

The collection of his columns published in the Observer and some unpublished   ones appear in a book form — Between Us Only.     The title itself tells the reader the topics he talks about are not so sweet   many times, and many of the articles irritate somebody or other.     Since it is ‘between us only’ and whispered in to your ears he often talks   about matters which many are scared to touch. He talks about burning homes,   divorce, pride and prejudice, human suffering, human fears, social trends and   changes and people’s idiotic concerns to keep up with the Jonesses.

As a human resources professional, in his essays Majid gives very important   and valuable tips and notes to company executives and chiefs.     Looking at the society’s craze for materialism and vanity the writer asks:   “What happened to the sanctity of marriage as the highest institution in our   lives according to our Islamic teachings — the Sunnah and the Hadith? Our   customs, traditions and heritage?”     Divorces are happening at the drop of a hat. So he advises “we need to impart   to our younger generations the sanctity and high importance of the   institution of marriage. The importance of patience, harmony, tolerance,   trust, faith, and confidence. This is in order to save our society for future   generations.”

In another article he asks: “What is this new ugly and unpleasant developments   now in our homes? This ‘domestic violence’ thing? Do we have an excuse for   this? The satellite dishes, and the foreign films and dramas that are beamed   to our homes? Or is that the new in-thing fashion now, the provocations and   ‘do not care stuff’ — followed by lifting of hand and beating out that poor   creature that bore you babies that you call your own and have made you proud   too? Do you consider the effect on the children? Hey, what is wrong with us   nowadays?”

In an advice to chief executive officers and managers the author reminds   “what happened to all the principles of treating staff with respect, with   utmost ethics, professionalism, kindness, cordial reception and courtesy?   Whether they are Omanis or others, people need to be treated properly and   with more esteem and respect.”

As a human resources consultant, Majid is giving valuable tips to job   applicants in his article “Applying for a job”. Some very important dos and   don’ts for the aspiring job seekers. “Send your application with jus Photostat   copies of your certificates and other documents.     “When you are called for an interview do not tremble and show fear and   worries. Remain cool, collected, calm and in control. “Never ask ‘how much   you will pay me’ until an offer has actually been made. “Prepare your CV   (maximum two typed pages only) and a covering letter (one page only) with   your application.

Majid’s “Between us Only” is a sincere attempt by a simple human being who   cherishes his culture and traditions, and wanted it to be preserved for the   coming generations. It is a labour of love with keen observation of the   society in the 21st century Arab world in particular. It also carries   warnings, resentments, fears and advises for all.

Between Us Only! Hits bookstalls.

The Oman Daily Observer Book Review

By A Staff Reporter

Majid and Book (Photo)

MUSCATMajid Said Nasser Al Suleimany’s recently released book Between Us Only! has now been launched at bookshops in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

In Oman, the 434-page book is available at Turtles Bookshop and Family Bookshop. Sponsored by MB Petroleum Services LLC of Mohamed Al Barwani, the book contains more than 84 articles that have appeared in the Author’s column in The Oman Daily Observer.

Majid has a very interesting and straightforward way of putting things. For example, in one of the articles, Majid explains in a very lucid style that ‘The beauty of Oman is that the nationals do not impose their customs, habits, heritage, behavior and values on others. We make room for accommodation and acceptance, to give chances in errors of judgement and in perceptions. We are moderate and flexible. Ask an Omani a direction, if he is free, not only he will direct you to it, but even take you there!’

To elaborate further on this point, Majid shares a very interesting, short and real story about how he got a job in Abu Dhabi. The General Manager had travelled to Salalah and lost his way on the trip. He was not only shown the direction, but this was done after he was given a meal with his family by one Bedouin family! When this GM saw Majid in his Omani attire, he said – ‘No interview – just give him the job, let him start tomorrow! The panel thought he was joking but he was dead serious!

Another interesting aspect of Majid’s writing style is that he can explain most burning complex and contemporary issues in a few sentences with unqualified clarity of thoughts.

 The Week – Issue 135 – October 2005.

 Our Correspondent

The Week talks to Writer Majid Al Suleimany about his recently released book

 Between Us Only!

Majid (Photo) Drawing on daily experiences.

Human Resources Professional Majid Al Suleimany describes his recently released book Between Us Only!, a collection of columns he has written for The Oman Daily Observer as ‘messages to the people of Oman’. Using his personal experiences, Majid has written on a variety of issues like ‘Ignorance Is Bliss’, ‘The Tsunami Disaster’ and ‘Cynics and Sceptics’ among others.

‘I would like the Omani people to move ahead in the world while maintaining our traditional values. I hope to help in this process through my writing,’ Majid said. The Writer, who enjoys watching documentaries and reading about world politics, says that he writes mainly on socio-economic issues. ‘Since I am in the human resources field, I also like to provide pointers on topics on how to prepare their CV. I also write on articles in Management and Human Resources which might be of help to the Society – and working environment in particular’.

Majid hopes more Omanis will begin writing in English. He said ‘It is very important to inculcate the reading habits in the youngsters and the children for our future. Parents and teachers have a huge role and responsibility in it. Schools should conduct essay competitions regularly so that children can improve skills in literacy, writing, reading and of expression. We need to improve fast and rapidly our generation reading habits in line with the global village and the rest of the world’ – he added.

The book is available in all bookshops in Oman and soon in UAE.

Explaining Death To The Children!

Explaining Death To Children!

crying-girl[1] death[1] end-of-power-and-being-rich[1] islamic-grave1[2] prayers-2[1] prayers-3[1]

Images Death and Prayers – For Demonstration Purposes Only!

This week a relative lady had died due to breast cancer case. Before the funeral – all the male were gathered in one house – and the ladies in another house where the dead person lay before the funeral wash and abolution. Both the houses were in the same street and belonging to the different brothers in the family.

As I was going to the toilet nearing departure to the Masjid time – I saw these two boys watching cartoons in television – with a loud voice on! So I asked the one holding the remote ‘why did you put the television on when you know that your grandmother had just died?’

His answer shook me to pieces – he hardly 5 years old told me – no we were told our grandmother was very sick and is in hospital – and the people are now leaving to go to the hospital! The children were in the men’s house! So I asked if ‘they were allowed to watch television because the men were leaving the house now? He looked at me as if I had asked him a silly stupid question!

I can only presume that their parents were so busy with the funeral arrangements to have time to sit and discuss about the death of their grandmother to them!

Frankly speaking, this week too I had a live Oman FM Radio interview with the subject of ‘Embedding The Habit of Reading To Children’ as the subject matter! In it I had talked about families disintegrating and the children being looked by housemaids – whilst the father and the mother were all trying to make more and more money – and not taking caring and paying attention to the children as they were required to – by mentoring, coaching and ‘leading by example’. My actual words were – What is the point of having so much more money – when the family is disintegrating in front  of your very eyes? See the article here! Also here and also at   http://majidall.com/2014/02/05/my-oman-fm-radio-interview/

I remember when our grandfather died no one had spoken to us about all the havoc and crying and what was going on. So we were taken to a neighbour’s house and there we did not think it as outward or weird to play football – whilst they were making the body of our grandfather ready for burial. Even as a teenager we did not know what to do when our baby sister died as at three months old – she was born of poor health and hardly cried till the last one day of her death!

Parents underestimate children and what knowledge they have on death – which can shock you quite a lot! Give them due credit – especially the children now of late! They have seen birds, cats, dogs etc die – some unfortunate even in fatalistic accidents – www.bethesafedriver.com

The tendency is to cover and protect the children from a ‘morbid and scary subject’ – but the outcome and repercussions are too scary and horrendous even to imagine! What kind of future will they have with their offsprings if they are not to be made to feel and have feelings – and to be made aware of death – and that death will come to all of us one day! Only we do not know our time – and how we will die!

This is a widely covered subject in the Internet – and there are many websites in the Internet to guide us – see below – but the best book is our Holy Quran (Gospel, Torah etc) and the Islamic Hadith too – and like I said in my interview to spend ‘more quality time with the children – and in leading by example!

  • Winner of The USA Gold Seal of Literary Excellence Award 2013.
  • For a long time now, I have been putting off the idea of writing this book – though it had been on my mind for a long time now. The mere idea of writing this book scared me to bits and pieces – for many valid and pertinent reasons.
  • As Arabs, work is worshipped (Islamic Religion calls on us to respect work like as if it is in praying). We are also brought up to be polite, courteous and decent (at least a majority of us). Abrupt, ugly, rudeness and distort are discouraged. Also it is not easy to say NO – as part of the culture, customs, traditions and heritage. So what went wrong here – especially in Management circles? Why are we behind the rest of the world, despite all our riches and resources?
  • I hope you will enjoy the book. I have tried to be as frank, open, forthright, honest, sincere and genuine as I can – as Readers who know me can give credence and credibility to me and will vouch and authenticate my works.
  • It is a no punch-spared, no barrels held stiff, no frills – play but to be as frank, open and honest as possible – so it can be a learning process for this generation and others to come in the future.
  • I have not spared myself, so there is just for it to be honest, sincere, genuine and hard hitting – sparing no one. Just No One!

A Cry For Help!            Arab Management (2)

Addressing the increased extremism, fundamentalism, and lack of tolerance and forbearance in the Arab workforce, author Majid Al Suleimany presents A Cry for Help!: Arabian Management Services – Context and Perspectives.

In three parts, A Cry for Help! concentrates on the management styles and aspects of companies located in the Arabian Gulf Cooperation Council that encompasses Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. It discusses the:

• Growing radicalization of local staff
• Misbehaving expatriates
• Unhappy, dissatisfied staff
• Poor treatment of staff, especially by European Western staff
• Increasing extremism and fundamentalism in offices
• Sensitive, related issues

In A Cry for Help!, Suleimany, a Management expert, focuses on what is particular about the type of Arab management, its context and perspectives, and what is peculiar, special, or particular to that work in the context and comparison to management styles of other nations. Using personal experiences, examples, and illustrations, Suleimany exposes the new reality and truth and moves away from the trend and approach of hiding issues and problems.

Why I Quit Writing Now!

The Old Guards and The Mafias!

Why I Quit Writing Now!

C - Short Takes3 - BUO TS 3D - The SequelE - Between Us Only!2 - BUO ST 2Wipe My Tears

This Will Explain Why Stopping Writing For Now!

Explaining Why! Please Do Not Stop Writing!

This week was very hectic and traumatic with very emotional painful and exhaustive exchanges between me and an ex boss in PDO! The irony was he had never been a direct formal boss to me in any aspects – but was instrumental in causing dent to my career – whether by his own volition or by instructions from higher up!

My mistake was copying him amongst my other ‘friends’ an email protest type to one local English daily. In a response he curtly said to me – Quote –

Majid,

Two things.

1. Avoid criticising others unnecessarily. 2. Avoid GLORIFYING yourself excessively.

That is the secret of success.

Unquote.

From the goodness of his heart – he copied this email to ALL on the list. I had addressed this direct to The Editor – and my inadvertent stupidity in including him in the copy circulation list! And giving him that opportunity any person like he was would not let go away!

Not to bore you with more sordid details, but there was a reaction from my two strongest supporters after bitter rancorous hard hitting exchanges with him. He later tacitly apologised – but asked me to take him out from my mailing list – which I was now most inclined to do anyway without any further prompt from him.

A         Response verbatim from one addressed to someone he knows well in PDO – and copied to me – Quote –

Dear Ustaadh xxx and after compliments

In the name of Allah – With due respects Sir –

A friend had forwarded me the not necessary response that this guy YYYYY has sent to Ami Majid. Unfortunately, people miss the very important thing that this man is highly appreciated and followed by many young Omanis as one lone voice that really cares and feels for us!

He is one of the few that took great risks and dangers to himself even harm when even in PDO and he suffered a lot life later on because of his stand on things and everyone.

It is very sad and tragic that you his so-called friends treat him like this and I can only assume an element of jealousy and envy – perhaps because of his popularity. You have hurt him so much and now he has decided to stop writing his websites and columns.

Only time will tell the repercussions in the future and please accept my sincere apologies for this email. Forgive my English also Sir.

Allah protect and preserve our country from all things bad inside and outside Ameen – Unquote!

B         Response verbatim from Number Two Responder – Quote

Dear Majid

If you want my personal advice and sent in good faith please keep away from all these people ex PDO especially because you cannot remove the hypocrisies and double standards within them.

It will not surprise me and from seeing some of the names that they will be communicating to each other and laughing and sneering you behind your back. This is how they are and will always be! Some of them even got later in life great personal tragedies and woes in their lives and in their families but they will never learn!

Keep away from them and even stop writing even. This is a lost cause beyond redemption and only time will tell! So please keep away! All of them combined cannot even be 20% of what you are as Majid.

I will always pray for you and your family Amin

Unquote.

And finally to those that finally killed my columns – I said to them –

Quote –

I see that ZZZ (expatriate person) has now taken over my columns! It will not surprise me that you will be paying him even 3 or 4 times my rate – but that is how things are nowadays! So it is not surprising to me at all. Take care and all the best! – Unquote!

Now you know why I am giving writing in this website low priority from now onwards! It was good whilst it lasted – but everything 9good) has to end one day!

Wishing you all the best!
