Behind The Wheel is a different book! I had a chance to read its Arabic version which carries the title “Khalf Ajalat Al Qyada” and shared it with friends, and family members. After reading, the Readers will easily get the clear message of the Writer. The book is a collection of articles and reports about one of the serious issues in Oman – car accidents.

The Author should be credited for such a wonderful work serving the Nation to overcome such a serious problem. In this book there are informative articles which tell you the causes of road accidents in Oman. All these articles carry different types of stories. After reading them someone will start thinking and raise question by himself that “why so many road accidents in Oman?”

The book also contains several photos and images even if someone is not interested in reading the article, and those photos convet the message.. In addition, in the reports there are good statistics about the number of deaths due to car accidents on a yearly basis.

Majid Al Suleimany is an Author of several books. “The Psychology of Arab Management Thinking” is one of his famous books, and worth reading too. The Author is also well known columnist. He is probably the first Omani who authored several books in English.

I don’t think the Author has written “Behind The Wheel” to be credited for himself, rather he wants it as a gift for Oman. Reading this book means creating awareness about road accidents. I fact, some stories mentioned in the book make you weep! These were facts and happened in different areas in Oman, a lot of valuable lives lost on the roads.

What should be next? This kind of book should not be kept in shelves for decoration, but must be circulated widely. How? It won’t be a bad idea if this book could be read in colleges where the message and awareness of road accidents can be shared with students who recently passed the driving test.

All drivers must read it as well as it will help them to take care while driving and past mistakes should not be repeated. The book can definitely add value for the Police, while giving instructions to new drivers.

Majid Al Suleimany has been successful in conveying his message – and this message will be kept and passed to the coming generations.

After writing Being the Safe Driver, Oman’s first of its kind book based on real life stories of road accident victims, author Majid al Suleimany has now come out with its Arabic translation.

Having originally written in English in 2013, Suleimany said he translated the book into Arabic to reach out to maximum number of people across the country.

“Road safety is an issue that needs to be taken to schools. Children should be educated on the horrible consequences of road accidents that have devastated thousands of families in the country,” Suleimany said, adding that he is planning to ask schools to keep the book in their libraries. “We should start with young people and educate them about this sensitive and fatal issue. I am trying to get in touch with the Ministry of Education as well. I have also given free copies to the Oman Road Safety Association and ROP Sohar to spread the message.”

A retired human resources consultant, Suleimany, who has authored many books, said that it was not easy writing this one, but a few personal experiences forced him to take a deeper look at the road safety issue.

Narrating an incident that shook him deeply, Suleimany said, “There was this young girl I knew who used to take great interest in my work and would often call to enquire about my writing. When I did not hear from her for a long time, I called the company where she worked. I was shocked to hear that she along with her family had got killed in a road accident,” adding, “Though I had read about the accident in a newspaper, but never realised it could be about someone I knew.

“Every day we read about accidents in the media, but how often we get to know what happens next? We hardly get to know about the families affected and how survivors struggle to get their lives back on track.”

He added that Oman is a country with one of the highest number of road accidents and casualties. “It is unbelievable how people put their and other’s lives at risk.”http://www.muscatdaily.com/adsense_features.html

Speaking about the translation of the book into Arabic, Suleimany said he received a lot of help from PDO.

Printed in the US, the book has a collection of more than 60 real life stories. While the Arabic version is available at Family Book Shop for RO5, the one in English is available for RO9.

Presidents and fellow writers have been paying tribute to Nobel prize-winning Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez who has died in Mexico aged 87.

The author was considered one of the greatest Spanish-language writers, best known for his masterpiece of magical realism, One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and US President Barack Obama were those among praising his legacy.3 days of national mourning was declared for Colombia.

Mr Obama said the world had “lost one of its greatest visionary writers”.

While, Mr Santos took to Twitter to pay tribute to Garcia Marquez.

“A thousand years of solitude and sadness because of the death of the greatest Colombian of all time! Such giants never die,” he wrote.

Gabriel José de la Concordia García Márquez (6 March 1927 – 17 April 2014) was a Colombian novelist, short-story writer, screenwriter and journalist, known affectionately as Gabo throughout Latin America. Considered one of the most significant authors of the 20th century, he was awarded the 1972 Neustadt International Prize for Literature and the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature.

García Márquez started as a journalist, and wrote many acclaimed non-fiction works and short stories, but is best known for his novels, such as One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967), Autumn of the Patriarch (1975) and Love in the Time of Cholera (1985).

His works have achieved significant critical acclaim and widespread commercial success, most notably for popularizing a literary style labeled as magic realism, which uses magical elements and events in otherwise ordinary and realistic situations. Some of his works are set in a fictional village called Macondo (the town mainly inspired by his birthplace Aracataca), and most of them explore the theme of solitude.

I hope you have removed the xxxyyzz shop price tags. I did not check last time you returned my books and gave them as Complimentary Gifts to VIPs.

I wish you all the very best with intrusion of Ebooks in the market and people can now order directly. Unfortunately the old ways of doing things in Oman are now having doors closing in slowly with the advent of time and latest developments.

Plus the sad fact that there are book sites that offer more than 50000 free books to download. I paid 20 pounds in UK for one of the books only 5 years ago!

If I were in this business I would be very nice and kind to my Customers especially Locals because of changing times and people having long memories. You can see for yourself live now on TV that people are changing fast….even here sadly!

I read in detail what was written by my colleague Dr Zakariy al Mahrami in a series of articles analysing Shaikh Nassir bin Jaid al Kharousi’s book Explaining the Behavioural Systems to their Majesties which was verified by Dr Waid Khalis.

The article made me eager to read the book so I asked Dr Zakariy about how to get a copy of the book, he told me the publisher is the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage. He was deeply sad that such an important book and other books are published outside Oman, while it behoves us as Omanis to publish them ourselves.

Once I attended a celebration held in an Asian country to pay tribute to the Omani navigator Ahmed bin Majid and his contribution to many inventions pertaining to maritime sciences. During the celebration a book titled Abar Maritime History was launched. It was mainly about Ibn Majid and the role of Oman in the Arab maritime. Later I knew that the publisher of the book is based in the state of Qatar.

It is true that knowledge knows no boundaries and no nationalities. But when it comes to topics that are part of the Omani culture and heritage, you feel sorry that the things which are originally ours come to us from beyond our borders.

This raises many questions, first what is the entity concerned with bringing out the treasures of knowledge and encouraging the researchers, thinkers and scientists to author books doing? Is it the Ministry of Heritage and Culture? In the past the Ministry of Heritage and Culture published hundreds of books and manuscripts.

The ministry’s library is teeming with books on heritage, science, jurisprudence, philosophy all authored by Omanis.

However, the ministry no longer gives much attention to the matter of publishing. Perhaps because all the books that were supposed to be published were already published, or maybe the ministry got fed up with the whole thing.

Printing and publishing in the Sultanate are now in a dire position with the writers, intellectuals, researchers and students seeking an alternative entity that can help them have their books published and distributed in the Arab world.

Besides, the authors are looking forward to have their books translated into living languages so that they can spread worldwide. I think those who are directly involved and concerned with the matter should be given the chance to speak about their woes in conferences and symposiums.

Are we today in need of an authority because the ministry is no more capable of performing its duties and keep pace with the rapid progress the world is seeing? An authority needs to be entrusted with encouraging the youths to write and translate the literary and scientific production of other nations.

No doubt this is the age of knowledge; we frequently hear the phrase ‘knowledge economies’. Many countries have already incorporated both knowledge and science in the national economies as better contributors than the sectors of gas, industry and trade. I think steps should be taken in order to have this sort of economy which basically supports science and knowledge.
